Action Learning Sets

Action learning is a structured way of learning with peers, sharing best practice and developing a supportive network.

Pears Action Learning Sets

Since 2017, we have been working with Action Learning Associates to run action learning sets for small groups of Pears grantees.

An action learning set is small group of people who meet regularly with an action learning facilitator. There is a classic structure for action learning sessions: A set member presents a real-life challenge or opportunity; the set listens and asks open questions and the presenter reflects, responds and comes up with an action plan. The next time the group meets, the presenter reports back on their progress, and develops a new plan if needed.

The benefits of action learning  include support and challenge from peers; a safe environment to explore new ways of thinking and doing; personal, as well as professional, learning and development and structured time for reflection away from day-to-day work demands.

Pears learning sets are made up of peers who work at similar levels of responsibility and meet every four to six weeks over a period of six months. A set may be fully online or hybrid with an in-person meeting at the start and end. The sets are facilitated by Sonja Ansell, Director of Action Learning Associates.  At the end of the facilitated sessions, the group has the option to continue meeting as a self-facilitated set, with Pears covering the cost of a check-in session with Sonja after a few meetings.

There is no charge for being part of a set, and we will cover any travel expenses for set members coming from out of London. All we ask is that set members commit up front to attending all of the facilitated sessions so that trust and relationships can build within the group.

If you are interested in being a part of our next Action Learning Set, please email admin@pearsfoundation.org.uk. Also keep an eye on our training update emails as we ask for expressions of interest when we’re ready to launch a new set.

My time in the action learning set was a really valuable time. I didn’t realise how much I absorbed in those sessions, listening to other professionals and their challenges. I’ve also used the technique of ‘action-learning’ in my own organisation on a number of occasions.
