“The most common leadership failure stems from trying to apply technical solutions to adaptive challenges”
Ron Heifetz
Developed at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government for leading change, adaptive leadership is a brilliant tool for leading in times of tension and uncertainty, when there are no easy answers.
Professor Ron Heifetz, who developed the framework, distinguished between two distinct types of challenges.
- Technical challenges, where the problems, and their solutions, are known and rooted in existing experience and expertise.
- Adaptive challenges, which are more complex. The problems – and solutions – may be unknown or hard to identify and require learning. The obstacles are less tangible than time and money; they involve hearts and minds, values, loyalties and relationships. And the solutions usually involve facing a loss, a change to the status quo, and navigating resistance to that change.
Based on the theory of adaptive leadership, this all-day workshop will give you tools to help you:
· identify and articulate your adaptive challenges
· mobilise people to overcome their resistance
· sustain your colleagues through a period of change
Who is this for?
This particular workshop is designed for CEOs and members of senior leadership or management teams. It will be particularly helpful for those who are leading through uncertainty and change, or who are encountering tensions and resistance and those who are new to a leadership role.
If you would like to come with a particular leadership challenge in mind there will be opportunities for you to work on it throughout the day, but the workshop will be equally useful for those who just want to take a day to do some reflective learning and add to their leadership tool box.
