Why can’t we all just get along? – Understanding our moral foundations

Human beings weren’t meant to live in groups of over 150 people. Our biology is perfectly designed to live in homogenous tribes as opposed to a global connected world. So it’s no surprise that we face all sorts of challenges when we live in multi-cultural diverse communities – it’s how our brains are wired.
This workshop shares the work of Dr. Jonathan Haidt, moral psychologist and author of The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Disagree about Politics and Religion. We will explore his distinction between our “hard-wired” moral instincts (e.g. unconscious bias) and our conscious moral reasoning (e.g. how we explain those instincts to ourselves and others). By better understanding the diverse ways people react to their own instincts (and those of others), we can expand our appreciation of why others think, believe, and behave differently from us.
This workshop will be of particular value to anyone working in the areas of shared society, citizenship, interfaith, inclusivity or other areas where valuing diverse narratives is an important skill. That being said, it is relevant to everyone as navigating diversity is a crucial skill for all leaders to possess, particularly in a world that seems ever more fractured.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have explored their own implicit biases, and will understand Jonathan Haidt’s five categories for explaining those biases. We will also explore how these categories might apply to each of our organisations’ teams and culture.
Note: While this training session touches on the issue of Unconscious Bias, it is different from the typical training that is widely available around diversity and inclusion. We encourage you to access those trainings in addition to this. However, this session will focus specifically on how our implicit biases impact our moral decision-making processes.
