Adaptive Leadership

“The most common leadership failure stems from trying to apply technical solutions to adaptive challenges” Ron Heifetz
Leadership requires knowing when it is time to solve and when is it time to learn.
Adaptive Leadership is a practical framework developed at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government for leading change, particularly during times of uncertainty or when there are no easy answers.
In his seminal work on adaptive leadership, Professor Ron Heifetz distinguished between two distinct types of challenges.
· Technical challenges where the problem – and solution – are known and based on experience and expertise.
· Adaptive challenges which are more complex. The problem – and solution – is unknown or hard to identify and requires learning. The obstacles are less tangible than time and money – they involve hearts and minds, values, loyalties and relationships. And the solutions usually involve facing a loss, a change to the status quo, and navigating resistance to that change.
Based on the theory of Adaptive Leadership, this all-day workshop will give you tools to help you:
· identify and articulate your adaptive challenges
· mobilise people to overcome their resistance
· sustain people through a period of change
Who is this for?
This session is designed for leaders so it is aimed at CEOs and members of senior leadership teams.
It is particularly helpful for those who are leading through change or who are encountering tensions and resistance.
If you would like to come with a leadership challenge in mind there will be opportunities for you to work on it throughout the day. However, the workshop works just as well for those who just want to come and add a new tool to their leadership tool box.
